Notes from my messy desk

My desk, my rules.

The restlessness has struck again and fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Squarespace doesn’t really make it easy for you to completely redo your site. Doing so involves copying my existing website, ensuring the links and images are working, and moving my URL over to the new site, which is way too much work for what is nothing but a whim, although I did manage to change some colors here and there. I'm also in the process of adding another page — Notes from my messy desk — where I will be posting everything journal-related. I’ve been journaling on-and-off since I was 9 years old, and consistently for over ten years now (consistently meaning I have at least one active journal within a given year), and I have all these journaling paraphernalia, so might as well be meta about it and write about writing. Notes from my messy desk was what I used to call my blog, but I decided to call this Some good old-fashioned blogging, because that’s exactly what this is — some good old-fashioned blogging. It may not be good for whoever reads this but it’s good for me (it forces me to sit down and write), and what’s more old-fashioned than early-aughts blogging? Although from what I’ve gathered, blogging is slowly climbing its way up the list of granny hobbies that are back in fashion.

But what I’m actually doing is not revamping my site — I’m procrastinating. The literal messy desk is but the proverbial tip of the (clutter) iceberg. I’m supposed to be sorting through and decluttering boxes of God-knows-what that have somehow accumulated in T’s room since she and A moved out, but instead, look at me, ignoring the mess and messing with a site that nobody visits. Ironically, we do have real (as opposed to virtual) visitors coming over — well, not really visitors per se, but my parents are arriving in a week (hence, the kick in the butt I need to clean up) and so far, all I have done is sort through and categorize my pens, pencils, and markers. Yay! But what is it with these pens and pencils and markers that just when I thought I have corralled them all (yeah, like brightly colored sheep), more pens and pencils and markers appear? A gel pen (or two) hiding behind my keyboard, an acrylic marker inside my kikay kit (!), a 2B pen tucked between the pages of my sketchbook. Just yesterday I found one of my Delfonics roll-up pencil cases with six fountain pens in them, most of which are still inked. Happy surprise indeed — I didn’t even know they were missing lol.

And yet, no matter how much I keep my hands busy, my mind can still get busier. So, between working, updating my blog, and trying to declutter, I've somehow managed to figure out some things. I don’t need to do a major everything-all-at-once decluttering — if categorizing my colored pencils by color is as productive as I can get in one day, then so be it. That’s still progress. If I manage to do one thing and only one thing when I get up to pee or get some coffee while working (do a quick vacuuming, empty the dishwasher, wipe down the bathroom sink) before going back to my desk, I still end up checking off some items from my to-do list. And if not-listening (I’ve picked up C’s habit!) to political, historical, and literary analyses while I’m working is how I pursue my intellectual pursuits, I still end up learning something on a daily basis.

I may not have my PhD but damn, my ADHD is serving me well.
