Random sensory quirks
(Or when my spiciness is spicying.)
I saw this post on Threads asking people to share their random sensory quirks and, as with the others who shared their neurospiciness there, I realized I have more quirks than I thought I had. So, since I’m already thinking about what these are, here’s a quirky listicle of the things that drive me crazy (are listicles even still a thing? Whatevs.)
Getting my hand wet or oily while cooking. Which is also why my hands tend to get horribly dry - I probably wash my hands a hundred times a day. (Oddly enough though, I don’t mind it when I get paint or ink on them. Go figure.)
Getting touched by other people while we’re all eating. Or immediately after we’re done eating. Have you washed your hands???!!
Food stuck on or in between my teeth. I need to floss and brush it out otherwise I’ll be poking at it with my tongue until my tongue is raw.
Wet plates and utensils. Especially if it’s in a restaurant. Eew.
Wet table surface. Especially if it’s a public table. Eewer.
Clothing labels against my skin. I actually break out in hives where it touches my skin.
Total darkness. I need some night light otherwise I feel like I’m suffocating.
Sweating. For some reason, when I’m all hot and sweaty for all the wrong reasons, I get really annoyed and sometimes even angry. And no, it’s not just perimenopause.
Burrowing my head under the comforter suffocates me. Most nights I have the comforter just on my legs and a soft throw wrapped around my arms.
The sound of two metallic things hitting each other: a spoon and a fork, a fork and a knife, a knife and a knife sharpener.
The metal end of a pencil scratching against a paper when the eraser has been all used up.
Brushing against the wet shower curtain after showering.
I swear there are more. I’ll probably add to this list when I find myself flinching after being caught in yet another sensory quirk that’s not in this list.
